Hours after a gang of armed robbers attacked a bank in Ondo State, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, on Tuesday , ordered security agencies to go after the bandits and apprehend them.
The robbers had on Monday stormed the First Bank branch in Ido Ani in the Ose Local Government Area of the state, killing no fewer than six people, including a policeman, bank workers and the Vice Principal of the Ido Ani Grammar School, with many others sustaining injuries.
The hoodlums also made away with the money inside the Automated Teller Machine of the bank .
The police, however, stated that one of the suspected robbers was arrested during the operation, while efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang were on.
Akeredolu, who spoke after visiting the scene of the incident and the monarch of Ido Ani , Oba Olufemi Olutoye , at his palace on Tuesday , charged the security agencies to arrest the bandits.
Represented by his deputy , Mr Agboola Ajayi , the governor described the incident as unfortunate and implored the security agents to ensure that the perpetrators did not go off Scot-free .
“We are glad that a suspect has been nabbed and I am very sure that he will create a channel that will lead to the arrest of the other criminals ,”
The governor, who said his administration would continue to partner security agencies to prevent a repeat of the incident , charged the residents of the state to always assist the security operatives by providing useful information that would help reduce crime in the state.
In his remarks , Oba Olutoye explained that the bandits also came into his compound and damaged his door , adding that by the time they gained entry into the palace, they discovered that “it was a fruitless effort . ”
He appealed to the state government to assist the affected families in order to lessen the burden that the incident had imposed on them .
The state Police Public Relations Officer , Mr Femi Joseph, said operatives of the command were already on the trail of the fleeing robbers and gave an assurance that the bandits would be apprehended soon .
